Peaches
While peaches date back to 4000 years ago in China, they are fairly new to us here in North America! Even though there are over 2000 varieties around the world, we only managed to get them about 400 years ago. They are a good source of Vitamins A, K and even have a bit of fibre. Luckily, living in Ontario, we have some of the best peaches in the world!
When purchasing, look for unbruised fruit with smooth red and orange skin. If you are looking to eat a peach within the day of purchasing, look for a fruit that has a slight give to it, but if you are looking into storing them for a few days, then look for firmer ones, but make sure they never have any green on them!
When storing:
When storing peaches, try to keep them at room temperature, to maximize their sweet flavour. If you do happen to stumble upon a peach with a hint of green on it, then just set it on the counter for a few days, and it will continue to ripen!
When cooking:
Like most fruits and veggies, peaches retain most of their nutritional value when eaten fresh! This fruit can be stewed, baked, puréed and even frozen in slices and thrown into a drink on a hot summer day- maybe garnish a delicious peach bellini!
Great Flavour Combinations:
Peaches taste great with vanilla, ginger and cinnamon. They also are extremely delicious grilled on the barbecue with a little bit of black pepper, rosemary and maple syrup or honey to top! Or try them grilled and thrown into some arugula, bresola and goat cheese!
